Games Backwards Compatible Volume 3: Rise of the Triad

For this volume, we're going to be playing Rise of the Triad: Dark War by Apogee Software. Since this game is easily available, we'll be starting right away. Our first milestone will be in one week - if you want to keep up with the discussions and the podcast, try to play through the first episode before April 6th's show.

Rise of the Triad is available at Good Old Games for $5.99 USD. As always, GOG games are 100% compatible with XP and Vista, so don't worry about having issues.

We'll discuss any particularly pressing questions or interesting comments on the show, so if you are enjoying the game, listen to the podcast to keep up with our commentary.

EDIT: New deadline - we're playing through episode three for April 20th's episode.

Played through the first two levels and enjoyed them both, so I'll say yeah. It's pretty fun.

It's awesome multiplayer. In the heady days of Duke Nukem 3D and the other Build engine multiplayer games, this was probably my favorite for balls to the walls action.

Of course, Dog Mode might have had a bit to do with that >.>

It wasn't terribly good tech wise, being based, as it was, off the Wolfenstein 3D engine, but it had some neat concepts, like bad guys being able to steal your guns (though you couldn't steal theirs) and getting a gun with a variable amount of ammo when it dropped.

Also the flamewall.

While my favorite 3d shooter outside of the Doom-Duke-Quake triumvirate was Blood, Rise of the Triad was pretty memorable. Ah, the days when every new game purchase meant a weekend LAN party in the near future....

I used to remember almost completely shunning this game back when it first came out on account of me being a fanboy over DOOM at the time and merely seeing it as one of those "Doom clones" trying to cash in on the success of the sudden FPS boom. However several years after it's release, I went back to try it out while looking for an old school FPS fix, and I realized that there was a lot of different things going on under the hood of Rise of the Triad that weren't found in DOOM. With enemies that would beg for mercy after being shot enough, the incredibly cool "God" mode (and humorously included "Dog" mode), springboard jump pads and various other elements, I saw Rise of the Triad to be a worthy FPS to play.

So very many 3 person death matches back in college. The "maze" level was always a favorite. Seeing a pack of drunk missiles coming over a wall at you or round a corner only to run into a wall of flame....good times.

Yeah. Talk about desensitizing kids to violence, ROTT didn't have the AI code to make it worth sparing people. It just encouraged kids to ignore their pleas for mercy.

Or in rare cases, they would fall down after begging to fake their death. THEN when you weren't looking get back up and start shooting the shit out of you. (At least from what I last remember about it)

I feel like I'm relying too much on the map but I honestly am running out of places to look for the right path out.

I don't see any HUD elements in my game, like health and ammo.
