Musing of a 10th class, talk about updating the spies disguise, talk about making sentries more dynamic, Scout update coming 'early this year', and other stuff:

Interesting article, but annoying that it teases you with the promise of new content, but no details of what that will be.

Have we had a thread speculating on the content of the Scout update? (or indeed, are such details out there already?)

How about a bat that gives increased chance of crit when you're in mid-air?

The Scout update should be replacing the pistol with a squirt gun, the scatter gun with a nerf gun, the bat with an aluminum bat, all of which do 1 dmg per hit, and all of the achievements should be "kill heavies" and "kill sentries", and you should get one of the original weapons back at 12/24/36 achievements.

The Scout is the next class slated for the special treatment, and Walker expects the update will be available early this year. Additionally, the team is juggling a number of side projects at the moment, including finally bringing a year's worth of the downloadable content and upgrades to the Xbox 360 version of the game. A new Payload map is in the works, more community maps are on the way and the team will soon unveil a very different new game mode.

As work continues, Valve is also slowly chipping away at a laundry list of problems that crop up over time between the character classes. Among other large-scale issues on the agenda, Walker says the Spy's disguise has nearly reached the end of its lifetime. Over time, average players have become much better at detecting and dispatching disguised Spies, making the ability pretty useless for all but the sneakiest of players. Additionally, Walker feels the Engineer's sentry guns have become "too binary." They're highly lethal to some players and wholly ineffective against others. Sentry guns are also easily dispatched by skilled players, leaving Engineers with little recourse. Keeping a delicate balance is important, as is adjusting problems that arise from the way players utilize the different abilities of each class in the game.
Bolding mine. They understand how easily some people notice spies, and know that good players can edge and pop shop sentries.

Yes? I mean, that was kinda my point about the article, that it dangles a few things in front of you but doesn't go into any details.

The ammo pack = stealth change was a good boost for spies, but I can't think of much that'd help the disguise. Perhaps keep it for a few seconds after you stab?

Using the disguise should make you glow brighter in your own team's color, and put a big neon sign over head pointing to you that says "SPY" on it.

Yeah, I have bad editing habits, I know. lolEdit: I mainly wanted to show that they knew the skill difference problems of certain game mechanics.

Nah, the main problem is that most people realize that if you don't have max health and have a primary weapon, you're a spy. Especially if you're acting at all suspicious or not firing at the enemy. The disguise itself is flawed, not how long you have it on.

You know, I actually consider spies to be a closed deal with the ammo recharges cloak update. I never go anywhere with spy when I'm not cloaked now. The disguise is best for simply preventing sentries from shooting you.

ooh! Good idea for spy update! Replace the sapper with the ability to attach explosives to a teammates back, and the enemy has to get a teammate to shoot/melee them off. That'd be fun as hell.

"Spy sappin' ...ME!"

the problem with the spy disguise is that it just doesn't work like people think it does. Most spies are uncovered not because their health is low or because their primary weapon is out or whatever. They're uncovered because they're acting like spies, and it's hard NOT to act like a spy and still accomplish what you want to do.

The disguise is very flawed but still accomplishes at least one important thing. Namely, it lets you approach sentries without getting destroyed.

For most spies, you eventually discover that the disguise isn't really nessisary. I still use it just to give me an extra second to move around without being shot, but the cloak is all you really need to get behind the enemy. You know when you have a good spy when you never see them.

Disguise is unnecessary with the cloak recharging with ammo, now.

Disguise is for sentries. Do note that if you rely only on cloak, remember to decloak out of hearing range.

Unless you continually disguise as a pyro and there's no pyro on our team for like the whole freaking round.

That was hilarious. Someone said "we need a pyro for this spy." We all said, "NO DON'T." Because Jack kept disguising as a class we didn't have so we always saw him coming. It was great.

I am conditioned to do that now. Whenever I hit cloak I automatically hit "4, mouse 1, 3." It takes me not but a second to do this, which allows me to keep an eye on where I am going. I don't like disguising as demo and everything else is out of my finger range. I need to work on disguising as other classes.
