Ooooo Rian Johnson Sci-Fi thriller (why the Fuck isn't Brick on Blu-ray?!) Add that to the list of movies I must watch this year.

Hopefully Brothers Bloom wasn't just an unfortunate (albeit entertaining) fluke. I'd like to see more from Johnson.

I don't understand what you are trying to communicate in your post. The guy is 2 for 2 on writing and directing snappy scripts and entertaining films. Been waiting to see what his next effort would be.

That being said, the level of action presented in the trailer and the lack of dialogue leaves me wondering what to expect from this script. I'm used to seeing his films highlighted by their awesome scripts and am curious to see if that continues to be the case.

That Brothers Bloom was an hour's worth of excellent writing and acting in a two hour run time.

LYT: So how was directing all the action in this? That’s obviously got to be a big change. I mean, there’s a little bit of action in The Brothers Bloom, but this looks like a whole new level.
RJ: It was so much fun. I mean, in the way that everything in this movie is bigger than Bloom or Brick, our resources to make it bigger were also there, and so for me it was like getting to play with a new box of toys. In reality, the basics of what you do with an action scene, like the sequence in Brick where Brendan is being chased by the guy with the knife through the high school, you know, that’s very similar to a car chase through a city, just cinematically and in terms of how you keep the audience oriented, how you cover it, how you build tension, it’s really the exact same fundamentals – just bigger toys. And none of that is difficult, because you have the big support group of a great crew who knows what they’re doing, so it was really comfortable and I just had a lot of fun.
Lots more at the link.

Brothers Bloom was a much weaker script than Brick and was almost entirely predictable.

I need to re-watch Brick. I don't recall the knife scene, but I do remember an intense sequence involving a car being well-staged.

Nice! It makes me wonder what I'd do in that situation? Shoot him and then work to avoid being sent back once you reach that age? I mean - time paradoxes galore. My brain hurts, but that doesn't take much.

I'm wondering if the future mob just makes their Loopers stay in the past for a certain amount of time, then let's them come back to the future. Like an underworld tour of duty or something.

Cause then if they're in the past, they deposit their gold in a bank account, then travel back to the future and whoa fuck all the interest.

I mean, assuming every kill has at least a few gold bars stuck to them, you could have fucking Arab oil tycoon money after a few kills.

I wonder if it's the same gold bars that the mob in the future steals from whoever owns them at the time, then sends back in time, where the looper sells them to get paid big money, and as the gold bars take the long way back to the future, they're stolen again...

Well, considering the plot (of which we know little at all, so this is conjecture, duh), why would the mob want loopers coming back? The whole point of sending your victims to the past is to eradicate evidence; you don't want your hitmen coming back to erase that work.

Anyway, in the interview I posted, Johnson said he went with the Terminator route of time travel, which I'm guessing means you can't go forward, only back. So it appears that the movie (or majority of it) takes place in a future where time travel doesn't exist yet but is clearly affected by the future of the future, where it does. So I guess the question is, are the loopers from the future where time travel exists and are sent back for life to do this job and live the cushy life, or are they just thugs from the "present" who are offered the position?

I assume at some point the further-future contacted the future (the movie's present) and set up the system with hitmen in the future (movie present). Since the movie is called 'Looper' I assume maintaining very careful closed time loops is key to making this system work. Because if you didn't you'd jeopardize the whole enterprise if you changed future events every time you set a mark back in time.

In that interview he says he takes advantage of the fact that the characters don't really understand all the rules of time travel, which would at least strongly imply that JGL is a native of his current time period.

Brick is one of my favorite flicks. I can't believe I loved that shit so hard and then took NO effort to see The Brothers Bloom. I don't know what my deal is with that, but I will attempt to rectify it by seeing the shit out of Looper at my earliest opportunity.
