Same mayor who was personally digging people out and delivering supplies when a blizzard hit a couple of years ago. Good to see an elected official whose automatic response seems to be 'what can I, personally, do about this?' and does it on the spot.

Um, no. I would not want to elect (for example) an extremely competent hardcore religious fundamentalist, because aside from whatever else they were doing they'd be implementing policies that I object to.

Fortunately, Booker seems to be a pretty solid guy politically as well. A quick search indicates that his focus as mayor has been decreased crime, increased affordable housing, and budget-balancing; that he's taken a pay cut while employing more people at the city level; that he communicates as transparently and directly as he can.

Booker is frigging awesome. There are two documentaries involving him, and I really liked the one I saw about his first mayoral run, Street Fight. Guy walks his talk at every single opportunity, as far as I can see.

He's been really, really consistent in his commitment to Newark, and in his lack of intention to seek higher office. When Obama became president he offered Booker a post as head of the White House Office on Urban Affairs Policy, and Booker refused.

I appreciate the heroism and all but as a firefighter what he did is just really really dumb. he is lucky that he didn't become a victim himself, forcing the fire department to look for two people instead of just one.
