I reserve judgement on the price until I see page count and quality. $35 is steep, but 150 full pages of color would justify it a bit.

i imagine it would be like the retribution book & pp hasn't disappointed its player base so far. i'd still buy it.

Well, the Retribution book is 114 pages full color, for the same price. I wouldn't be surprised to see the core faction books larger.

I am excited to see the new books, but wow, the price is a bit much. $35 per faction book isn't realistic. That's even more than Games Workshop Codexs aren't that much (or at least they weren't). As much as it bothers me to consider it, I'll probably download pirated .pdfs of all 5 faction books.

Its a shame too, since I do want to support Privateer, but I think their prices are starting to spiral out of control. This after just a few months ago they released .pdf versions of the RPG sourcebooks for $30-$40 for a download.
Or you could download the free mk2 cards instead of stealing?

Captain Kara Sloan goes to war as a one-woman rifle brigade. When focused on the destruction of her foe, every warjack she commands becomes linked to the pull of her rifle’s trigger to unleash a barrage of unparalleled accuracy and power simultaneously. Armed with her custom magelock rifle, she walks into the most vicious of firefights without hesitation and always emerges the victor.

Wow. Those new winter guard look nice. But damn, $50 seems like it is a lot. But they look so much better than the old ones, I'd have to buy two boxes and convert one into regular winter guard. Damn this recession and the fiscal responsibility it has forced on me!!!

The trencher comandos are also slick. I would get them just to paint.

The light warjacks commissioned by the Cygnaran Armory set the standard by which all light ’jacks are judged. The original Charger chassis has proven an excellent platform for versatile and deadly machines. The Firefly is the most recent variant of the Charger chassis and possesses cutting-edge electro-mechanika capable of frying opponents to a crisp.

Seems like the factions are going to be getting more than I expected in their new books. One Warcaster, a light, a heavy and one unit so far, right? Did I miss new UA's or solos? Either way I really want to see some new things for the Churchies!

There was a bunch of concept art sketches in the current No Quarter of stuff that hasn't been previewed yet. At the minimum, there's some sort of Stormblade guy that was packing a souped up version of the staff the leader has plus a *massive* turbine backpack, and also what looks like a Stormsmith that's packing different hardware.

Some people got their copies of Prime MkII in the mail (they had a pre-order at Gencon Indy). Here's the spoilers on what the new jacks do.

Cyclone
POW 12, baby!

*action Dual Covering fire ( two 3" AOEs )
Rapid Fire ( d3 each )

POW 14 open fists.

Same cost as a Defender. Same chassis. ( same stats )Easy to marshall and it will shred infantry. Which is good, because it's doing diddly squat to jacks.

Corrupter
Slayer chassis and statline.
Same cost as two nightwretches.
Immune to corrosion.
Melee attack is Pow 15.
Range 12 / rof 1 / Pow 14.

Both get to choose one effect from this list: ( when living model killed )
3" aoe , pow 10
warcaster heals d3
this jack heals 1

The third attack type ( 'jack heals one point ) has a secondary effect. "For the rest of the turn, ...can channel spells through the enemy model as if it... Arc Node ability. At the end of the turn... is destroyed."Bizarre! 3" AOEs aren't what they used to be, and Corrosion immunity means it'll ignore certain kinds of friendly fire. But turning enemy models into arc nodes is just crazy!

Templar
Same chassis as a Vanquisher. Same cost.

POW 17 flail with Reach, Beat Back, and Chain Weapon. It's a beat stick/damage soak. It's nice and seems appropriately priced, but it's less flashy than the others.

Decimator
Same chassis as Juggernaut. Same cost as Destroyer.

Rng10 /rof 2 / Pow 15 gun with Beat Back
POW 18 Ripsaw with Sustained attackSounds like a focus hog. It's still useful, but you might want to bring a Koldun Lord around if only to feed it focus.

"Tharn women practicing the rites of the Bloodweavers are true masters of bloodletting. Their devotion to the Devourer Wurm is absolute, and they kill with the visceral immediacy of sacral blades wielded in their own hands. As their blades taste flesh, primal power causes a victim’s heart to race frantically before the blood suddenly ignites and vaporizes into an expanding mist."

Tharn Bloodweavers from Metamorphosis. Pretty neat models. I'd give them pit hair if I were to paint them.
I have little interest in playing this game, but I just ordered a set of Tharn Bloodweavers because they look wicked and I want to paint them.

Surprised the Exemplar Cinerators (http://privateerpress.com/warmachine/gallery/the-protectorate-of-menoth/units/exemplar-cinerators) didn't get mentioned, because holy crap. Bastion's big, shield-wielding brothers.

Emboldened from the wounds inflicted by the impure, Exemplar Cinerators move ahead of their brothers in arms, the Bastions, to breach enemy ranks with flame and steel. Cinerators channel the agony of their wounds into holy rage and are armed with ancient blades and shields passed down from fallen Knights through the centuries. An unquenchable flame flickers across the blade, blazing white-hot when wielded in battle.

Merc Contract & Magnus' Tier Lists rules (http://privateerpress.com/company/blood-and-coin-mercenary-contracts-for-mk-ii) are up on the front site as well

I was just reconciling to picking up uh... well, pretty much everything that Cygnar had coming down the pipe and now... Well, those Cinerators look really badass and I love the look of the new Man-o-War Bombardiers from the most recent NQ. And on top of that, I need to buy some Idrians and Steelheads because Magnus' Tier Lists are awesome.

So here I sit, gluing together the Commander Adept Nemo resculpt and a Houseguard Riflemen Unit Attachment, wondering whatever my wallet shall do.

Man, I wish I knew people around here who played. The Menite style looks so awesome. (How are the Menites game-wise?)

in game the main strength they have is synergy. all the models, while not as strong individually compared to the other factions, become stronger together. the exemplars for example have five or six units that count as exemplars where they can get the bonuses from kreoss' elite cadre.

PMAvers
2010-01-08, 1:32 PM
Heck, even just inside a unit, there's some nasty synergy.

The Bastions (heavy multi-wound infantry), for example. They can take a insane amount of damage before they start dying due to their whole "split damage taken across models" thing. It's something like 40+ before one can die.

Archangel3d

The Vigilant is interesting. 21 ARM on a light jack in the front arc? And immunity to blast damage for friendly models in base to base? As one of those comments read, it's like a mobile bunker for low ARM stuff that's usually taken out by blast damage.

Boreas
2010-01-22, 11:49 PM
I think the best guy to give an Avalancher to is Thor. Pronto lets the jack move and still claim the aiming bonus or move twice for a greater threat range. The free Jack Marshall boost you can use to boost the attack roll, and Tune Up boosts all of the damage rolls. All for zero focus.

It's a very defensive jack, but it's pretty cool. With the low low P+S 11 on it, it's no good at applying damage, but there's always Power Attacks. Slamming and Locking with this guy is going to be tremendously annoying for your opponent.

My fingers are currently stuck together due to putting Destors (eeeeeeeeeeeeee) together. Surprised how easily they're going together, though. I think the torso of the rider being one piece (instead of the normal "upper half slots into a hole on the horse base which also has the lower half molded to it") is helping a bunch.

Slightly surprised that I didn't have to pin anything, everything's going together with just glue.

Me, I'm curious to what the "Next Big Thing" is that was mentioned at the end of the last NQ.

Supposedly it wasn't referring to battle engines, and is supposed to be a late summer release according to the BattleFoam folks.

EDIT: Apparently the new cover's been spotted around the web, and mentioned:

"UNBOUND! Large scale battles in the Iron Kingdoms".

PMAvers
2011-04-19, 1:54 PM
Soles posted some stuff in regards to Unbound.

UNBOUND is a system for large-scale WARMACHINE and HORDES battles in which players each field 150+ point armies with three or more warcasters/warlocks. It is more of a new way to play WARMACHINE and HORDES than it is a truly new system. It uses the same models and mostly all the same rules. Rather than just an escalation in scope, UNBOUND is a retooling of the WARMACHINE and HORDES systems that provides a truly unique play experience.

Throughout UNBOUND games, you and your opponent take turns activating portions of your armies, rather than the entire army each turn, giving you the chance to react to their opponent’s moves and keeping you both engrossed and focused on the game with little downtime. We wanted to bring massive battles to the tabletop without the massive waiting between turns.

The complete rules for Unbound will be in No Quarter 36 along with a short appendix of model by model changes that streamline the interaction of some special rules with the modified turn activation system. No Quarter 37 will feature UNBOUND scenarios and future issues of No Quarter will continue to offer new UNBOUND content.

We have been having a blast playing and designing (and playing) UNBOUND for the past few months and it is really great to finally be getting this stuff out to you. This one was really a labor of love and I think it genuinely kicks some serious ass.

Supposedly tomorrow's Insider will be talking about it.

I've also been waiting for a Morrowan Warcaster/army since early Mk I days, so actually getting one with Wrath is awesome! I just can't wait to see Blaize's tier list. Oh, and I think I'll finally get around to a Retribution force in the next few months. Angry Elves for the win!

But there's still a number of units/solos/UA's we haven't even seen yet, so there's still hope! And I don't think any of the Battle Engines are all that stellar, and us Protectorate players have not even seen our actual model or our rules yet, and the release was pushed back to boot!

I kind of wish that they had taken a different direction with the Battle Engines. I mean with bases that are so friggin' huge I think they would have worked better as army-buffing mechanisms as opposed to fighting machines . . . of course I think that's pretty much what Retribution's is, isn't it?

Also, holy CRAP putting Morty together is quite a mission! Of course it would have gone a lot better if I wasn't so gung-ho on getting it all done in one sitting <.< lol

Honestly, after seeing them all played (at least, the ones we know stats for), I think they're all solid. The Wraith Engine's fairly foul to go up against, especially with that armor debuff.

I love my AFG, since being able to slam shit across the board is always fun. :cloud9: Plus, it doesn't really require any support from the rest of my army, it's full of RAT 9 ranged pain all the time. Plan is to have a Hydra and a Daemon flanking it with Vyros for some ultimate Bird's Eye ranged dakka sillyness.

The Storm Strider has a ton of killy potential with all those Electro-leaps.

And I know one of my locals is looking into buying a second Gun Carriage.

Wow, lots of news overnight. New anthology books for Hordes and Warmachine next year, picking up after Wrath/Domination story lines. Super Epics announced, Gaspy3 and Lylith3 so far. A new SciFi setting, Level 7 is in the works, though nothing more than that has been announced. And the IKRPG will be getting relaunched at GenCon 2012. It's a new rule system, not DnD, will be similar to WM/H style and Warcasters/Warlocks will be playable.

The Skorne and Trollblood battle engine concepts were shown too, with the Skorne getting a big dinosaur thing with a hawdah and gun on top (I guess it featured in the Witchfire Trilogy?) and Trollbloods are getting a big ass gun towed by a bison.

Well, that's rather what I expected, although not what I hoped for. I guess we'll have to see how it turns out, but if they think that making war/casters/locks playable "out of the box" is the most prominent issue they needed to resolve with IKRPG, then they're more out of touch than I could ever imagine.

EDIT: You can already play a warcaster, you just need about 7 levels of an existing class first. I never saw anything wrong with this, but apparently enough people cried that they would have to play as something else for a while before they got to be an ambulatory catastrophe that it warranted a change. I just hope you start as a weedy-ass warcaster and not the titan of the battlefield they're supposed to be.

DBZ Is Gold
2011-06-19, 11:28 PM
Yeah, despite the clunkiness of the current IKRPG, it still had a good feel to the setting. They could really just streamline some of the old rules, like making firearms less of a hassle to use, maybe have some sort of action point-like system, and it'd be the bee's knees.

Psychomancer
2011-06-19, 11:38 PM
You know what, I'm OK with clunky. Even if they're not sticking to the d20 (which I understand if not agree with) the Iron Kingdoms are a setting that basically asks to be represented with a clunky system. It can clunk all it wants as long as it works.

What I think needs to be really addressed is the "building shit" part of the game. The rules as written basically let you make battery-operated versions of existing Dungeons and Dragons 3E magic items. There's a lot more what needs building besides swords, armor, and shiny new guns, y'know?

Am I the only one slightly disapointed by the number of lists that only include one or two Jacks? Especially in Khador, who have awesome looking Jacks, people seem to usually only take one, maybe 2 at higher points. And honestly, it feels like even that is a pity pick because of the free points.

The game is about big steampowered robots, people. If I wanted infantry I'd play WH40k.

First of all, I'm a guy who'll occasionally cram 4 heavies into a 25 point Searforge list, so I completely understand the attractions to using lots of jacks (and beasts. One of the aforementioned heavies was Lug.). But there are reasons to take infantry.

Infantry will always have one thing on warjacks and that's the amount of board space they occupy. For that reason alone, infantry will always have a place on the table in WM/H.

The other thing is, warjacks (especially heavies) are a drain on the warcaster's focus. Unless your caster has extremely efficient warjack buffing spells or abilities (Full Throttle, Unearthly Rage, Iron Horse, etc.), it makes no tactical sense to fill up on jacks.

It's much better now than in MkI. Back then guys like Karchev and Amon never saw the light of day. I would never take more than two myself (with my Khador, anyway). Now, two is about average for me. Irusk usually only gets one because he's much better with infantry. Ones like Sorscha or Zerkova get two because they really don't have a preference one way or the other. Karchev gets 3.

PMAvers

The Iron Kingdoms wiki is pretty sparse. You could try picking up back issues of No Quarter, which has a lot of fluff pieces, and the rulebooks themselves have the main storyline in them. Heck, the Monster Manuals for the IK ruleset are "written" by Victor Pendrake, an adventuring scholar.

I'm not sure if the MK2 rulebooks have the story up to the point of the edition change.

Bump cause I need HELP!

I bought some Retribution models (Dawnguard Invictors) and I'm trying to paint them in a similar manner to to studio style. I'm going a little differently though by doing a purple "glow" instead of the turquoise that the studio paint job has. And I totally SUCK at it.

I'm stripping the models tomorrow and I'll restart later in the week, but do you guys have any tips for how to paint white armour? Should I prime white and just add in details? The lines for the "glow" are EXTREMELY small (I don't know if you guys have seen the models - holy crap how are you supposed to paint four layers from black primer to white armour and still have any detail?!) and any tips for painting in those grooves without making a mess all around it would be greatly appreciated >.<

So after like 5 years, I have finally begun work on my Harby!

https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/118279131130875690624/albums/5674922755127835825

That is my work in progress album. I think I am going to redo the "heat" effect on the blade, after doing some research on how metal heats up, I find I am not happy with what I did.

*edit* Let me know if that link doesn't work, I'm still getting the hang of the album feature in G+.

In regards to the tips on painting white, here is what I did on my harby.

1. Prime white with a good primer that goes on smooth. I use dura something or other white outdoor spray (I'll get the real name when I'm home, it works great)

2. Ink the whole model with Badaab black, this helps with easy shading.

3. Paint parts to be white with 2 or 3 thin coats of menoth white base.

4. ink the edges, not the whole thing, with Gryphon Sepia.

5. Apply 3 to 4 thin layers of Menoth White highlight, working at a 99% coverage to about 80%. I.E. the first coat will cover 99% of the area, next coat should cover about 95%, etc. Keep in mind, the more coats (with less percentile separation) the more even the blend towards the end.

Be careful not to go too thin on the menoth white highlight, as it will be really spotty. But at the same time, if you are too thick, you will get brush strokes. It's good to test the flow on your thumb nail or palette before applying to the model.

I usually poor about 4 to 5 drops of reaper flow improver into my pallet. Then I'll dip my brush into the paint, then a quick light dip into the flow improver pool. then I'll brush repeatedly on my palette till I get the consistency I'm looking for. Sometimes I have to get a little more paint or improver in the process. If you do, just repeat the steps. After a while you get a nack for how much you need per brush full of paint.

Now for your "lines with glow", if they are directly inset into the armor plates that will be white, I would paint them first (after the prime, and ink step), I would dilute the color to be almost the consistency of an ink. Then follow the white painting steps.

One last and final, and maybe the most important part to painting white, what brushes are you using? I find with whites and yellows, the quality of the brush is VERY important. If you can afford it, I'd recommend picking up some winsor and newton series 7's.

So holy shit Warmachine is getting Titans! Well, not Titans. But they're finally bringing updated Colossi into the game!

I1N0NLykLyQ

These things are friggin' massive! I kind of wish they had done these first instead of the Battle Engines, but from the video it looks like Battle Engines were a way to see if they could eventually include a Colossus into the game without it making the game completely broken.

God damn they look sweet! I need to finish painting up my Retribution . . . I need to pick a paint scheme for my retribution <.< lol

EDIT: Damn this requires it's own post, but I don't want to double post >.< lol

PP has also announced a mobile app being made available sometime in March called War Room (http://privateerpress.com/warroom/). Features include:

Army Creation Workshop: Players can select their faction and game size and then choose their warcasters and warlocks, warjacks or warbeasts, units, solos, and battle engines to create valid lists, all within the War Room application.
Full Card Display: Model stat cards are shown exactly as they are printed, so players can reference them easily and with the same confidence as printed cards.
In-Game Status Tracking: In-game damage and status tracking will give players immediate and easily accessible information on every fighting model in their command.
In-Game List Sharing: Lists will be sharable between every player using War Room in the same game so they can quickly access each other’s model status and abilities, allowing players to keep their focus on the tabletop action.
Turn Clock: This optional player-initiated feature allows players to keep individual turns fast but fairly apportioned.

The base app is a free download and contains cards from all current WARMACHINE and HORDES starter products.

Full faction decks for both WARMACHINE and HORDES will be available as additional downloads for $6.99. Every deck will include all currently released stat cards for that faction as well as new model updates for the life of the current rules set. With the nature of the Warmachine ruleset being what it is, and with the use of cards to keep track of individual units, I really do think the system lends itself well to this kind of digital format. I'm really glad to see them take advantage of it!

What's really cool about it is being able to send lists real time (at least I think it's real time, I could be reading the article incorrectly) to opponents using the app as well, so you'll both have all the information about the game right there.

It wasn't the white armour in the end (although that still pisses me off) it's the fine detail in some of the smaller pieces with the teal magic highlights on some of the models. I just don't have the skill to make it look half decent, let alone anything close to what the PP models look like.

In the end I think I'm going to go with a more natural-ish kind of theme, lots of greens and browns.

Bumping, because the DM of the shop D&D game I was playing in recently got me and a few of the other players into Warmachine/Hordes. I latched onto Circle Orboros from the Hordes side, and I'm having a blast. I'm still basically running the starter battlegroup pack with a few additions (Epic Kaya w/Laris, Ghetorix, and Pureblood Warpwolves because I wanted to grab some of the older, better Pureblood models while they were still available).

In somewhat related news, Miniature Market (http://www.miniaturemarket.com/) has a 5% off Warmachine/Hordes coupon code (WMHRD2) good until June 6.

Out of curiosity, anyone have enough experience with Circle Orboros to have any thoughts on Tharn Bloodtrackers vs. Bloodweavers? I'll have both eventually, but I can only afford to get one at the moment. Bloodtrackers would give me more ranged, but nothing in terms of power or range I don't already have via warbeasts. The Bloodweavers can be fragile, but that's less of a concern with the warlocks I'll most likely be running on a regular basis (one can give them stealth, the other can resurrect them). And they pack a punch with the Gang ability plus the stuff their blades can inflict on living units.

Boreas

Circle tends to have more difficulty against harder targets. Both units have Stealth natively, so at range all you have to worry about are sprays and AOEs (generally). Both units can be P+S 11 weapon masters (BTs at range, BWs in melee) without outside help. Personally, I'd go for the one that gets me more attacks and doesn't care whether my target is living or dead. Bloodtrackers.

Edit: Has anyone been paying attention to the new book, Colossals? It has Colossals! And Vlad, Kreoss, Asphyxious, and Nemo all went epic again!

Gang actually gives them some utility against hard targets that Bloodtrackers lack, and not all their abilities key to living units.

Though taking Lord of the Feast would also offer some punch against harder targets and tilt me back to Bloodtrackers. Hmmm.

Mountain King costs 20 points

Speed 5
Str 15
MAT 5 (:()
RAT 5
DEF 9
ARM 19 (That is fairly good)

P+S 19 Fists

SP 10 POW 16 Spray (can conditionally shoot twice per turn.)

Animus (Sucks): When a warbeast makes a special attack, its attack rolls are boosted.

Kill Shot (Kill a target in melee, get a ranged attack once per turn.)
Snacking (Kill a target in melee, heal D3.)
Whelp Shedding (ANYTIME you suffer damage, drop a whelp.)

Slammed targets move an additional 2 inches
Power Slam: Slams d6+2 inches
Sweep (2 inch thresher for P+S 15)

I am kind of sad that it isn’t better.

MAT 5 REALLY sucks on a beast like this.

5 Fury though and 48 damage boxes 7 Threshold.

We tried the demo out last night and my players loved it. They really liked how each one of their characters felt useful and contributed to the fights. The game really works well with minis but aren't necessary. If you don't use minis it would really fall to the GM to try and figure a way for the players to know if they are in range for abilities and powers with out giving them the exact number.

The biggest issue that came up is deciding what classes to play, so far we have a Magehunter/Cutthroat, Warcaster/Aristicat, Field Mekanic/Military Officer, Stormblade/Knight and we have one more and he hasn't decided but it would be something Iron Fang.

I would switch out Ossy for Ravyn, Rayvn has snipe and is very nice on the AFG and Invictors. Also the mini feat with Rayvn feat and snipe on your Invictors is really nice. 18 inch range on their guns is nice. First turn have Rayvn cast snipe on the AFG, upkeep it for the second turn, second turn stand still and aim with the AFG to lay down either the AOE or the 3 shots (range 20"). If you keep Banshee in B2B with the AFG it helps his range also. Activate Rayvn, pop feat, cast snipe of Invictors and watch all your range attack models own everything.

Also another reason to use Rayvn is because her feat helps almost of your models, while Ossy does help range models his feat affects more enemy models while Rayvns helps friendly models and swift hunter really moves you around to help with zones and objectives.

Just a few tactics.

Cyriss is a cult from early Iron Kingdoms fluff that apparently has become a much bigger player than previously thought. Iron Kingdoms World Guide for the 3.x rpg has info on them, I believe.

Boreas
2013-02-01, 11:22 AM
Yep. Ever since reading the IKRPG, I've been hoping they would eventually come to WM. Cyriss is the god of technology (true neutal). The Cult of Cyriss has been secretly establishing temples and factories all across Western Immoren. The high-ranking priests put their souls into clockwork bodies, and they were building a large construct of some type to bring their god to Caen. They had a few exclusive weapons, and some creatures in the first Monsternomicon directly referenced them. It seemed like it would be fairly easy to translate Cyriss from one set of rules to another.

EDIT:

Then again...

A number of specific aspects of the previous depictions of Cyriss and her faithful do not apply with the new faction. It's probably best for old-timer RPG gurus to brace themselves for many aspects of the Convergence to differ from what you may have expected from previous readings about the Cult of Cyriss. I suggest entering into things with open minds and putting aside any and all preconceptions.

That's from Doug Seacat, PP's head writer.

Cyrissits depend on the same nodes of power as the Circle of Orboros, so these two factions occasionally come into conflict over real estate. They're a very shadowy faith with members among all sorts of intellectual and technological organizations throughout the Iron Kingdoms. They're nominally friendly with Cygnar, and have a temple in the capitol city of Caspia.
As one of the old-timer RPG gurus Doug was talking about, I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, the Art Deco look and machine soldiers are pretty swanky, and I like the shift away from "absolute conformity" to "perfected individualism" in the characters. More Cyriss related stuff in the wargame can only lead to more cool stuff for the RPG, which is fine by me.
On the other hand, bringing the faction out of the background takes away the secretive spookiness that made them an interesting ally/enemy in the fluff. The Cult pushed ahead with their own goals, right under the noses of everyone else, with members in workshops and universities everywhere. Now what? Is Cyriss going to become a household name in the setting? I don't know how I feel about that.
I was amused to see that one of their Warcasters was an antagonist from the Witchfire Trilogy- had he been a warcaster at the time, we probably wouldn't have trounced him as easily as we did!

Boreas

Every few months, PP provides rules for casual league play. These include scenarios, alternate stats and rules for existing models, and a short story setting up the action.

Here's a link (http://privateerpress.com/organized-play/leagues/umbra) to the info for the current league which just started. Convergence doesn't appear in the story, but they are the likely villains. It sheds a little light on their modus operandi. And in the months that follow, we'll learn more about how they will be represented in the fluff.

I guess it's going to come down to the big question: "what are they up to?" And we won't know that until we get more information.

Part of me actually wonders if it's linked to the supposed increased Cephalyx activity hinted at in the league fiction. Might be hints to them being the next Hordes army.

I totally blame Baldur's earthquake ritual thing. Maybe it unknowingly hit some of their underground caverns causing cave-ins, and they're having to come to the surface to survive.

So my 40k buddies are doing a mini-revolt over to hordes. Two of them are splitting the hordes starter. Looking online, they say one faction is 20 points and the other is 21. So I think I'm going with Gatormen since those are the ones I want to paint. Not knowing any of the rules, does this look like a decent 20 point list to take on the two factions in the starter box?

System: Hordes
Faction: Bloody Barnabas - Apex Predators
Casters: 1/1
Points: 20/25
Tiers: 2
Bloody Barnabas (*6pts)
* Bull Snapper (3pts)
* Blackhide Wrastler (9pts)
Bog Trog Ambushers (Leader and 5 Grunts) (5pts)
Gatormen Posse (Leader and 4 Grunts) (9pts)

Boreas
2013-05-13, 4:21 PM
One thing the starter armies have is redundancy. In Hordes, in order to fill your warlock up with Fury, you need warbeasts to generate it first. Both armies you'll be opposing can stand to lose a beast (or three in the case of Legion) before your warlock is forced to damage himself to fill himself up with Fury. Your list can't lose any.

Barnabas was the first Gatorman warlock released IIRC, so it's fitting that you have him here. The Wrastler is the Gators' go-to heavy warbeast. He's a keeper. The Posse match up well against the heavy infantry Circle and Legion will be bringing.

It's the light beasts that I think we need to look at to add that redundancy I was talking about. The Bull Snapper is a handy support beast, but not too useful in combat. Definitely keep the one you have. The other option for Gatormen are Boneswarms. They are not thought of very fondly by most Gator players. If you like how it looks, by all means take it. Dropping the Bog Trogs and adding the Boneswarm brings you to 19 points. Alternatively, grab a second Bull Snapper and pick up a Croak Hunter solo bringing you to 20.

As someone who also just started in on a Hordes force (I bought one of the Legion of Everblight starter boxes because I couldn't get any of my other local buds to half and half the 2-player version), is there somewhere online that shows a very basic breakdown of how a game will play out? The Privateer Press website has the Quick Start rules for free. These come with every starter box. You should have these, but just in case you don't...

http://privateerpress.com/files/Hordes%20MkII%20DemoRules-WEB.pdf

Generally speaking, the turns go like this (and I'm going to pull this from the top of my head so I might miss something. Read those rules!):

Maintenance Phase - Certain effects resolve in this phase. Overall, not a lot goes on here, especially with starter box games.

Control Phase - This is when you leach Fury off of you warbeasts. Then you check to see if your warbeasts Frenzy. Then you spend Fury to upkeep spells.

Activation Phase - You choose a model/unit. That model/unit then gets to move, cast spells, attack, or whatever else it can do, and it is done for the turn. Then you move on to the next model/unit, and the next, until you run out of things to activate. You choose the order things in your army activate.

If you want to play beast heavy, Absylonia is definitely a good choice.

As someone who also came over from 40k, the best piece of advice I can give is get ready to lose. A lot. WM/H is different enough from 40k that it took me a while to wrap my head around it. I still lose quite a bit, but the fights are usually a lot closer and I do win as well.

The biggest thing is that units are (generally) not spammed like in 40k. There's no compulsory troops or anything like that. And most minis in WM/H are designed to interact with and boost each others' battlefield performance. And the fact that each unit makes its full activation one at a time instead of in phases takes a while to get used to. All in all, I enjoy WM/H more than 40k gameplay wise anymore.

As to starting Gators, just remember that they are not a "full" faction and do not have the same number of options that the main factions do. They are also split with the Farrow within the Minion faction. They are fun, and well balanced, you just won't have the same number of options.

Thanks Darkspiff and Boreas, I'm going to have to keep those bits if info in mind. And I do have the quickstart rules and the Primal rulebook, so I think I have the majority of the rules, I just need to sit down and read through them to get a better idea of how to actually play the game. Should be a lot easier now that I have more time, since my classes for the semester are over.

Aight, good advice. I'm gonna go with the 2nd snapper and croak combo because i think i'd want two croak hunters eventually painted up as frog and toad (frog and toad are friends!)

Faction: Bloody Barnabas - Apex Predators
Casters: 1/1
Points: 20/25
Tiers: 1
Bloody Barnabas (*6pts)
* Bull Snapper (3pts)
* Bull Snapper (3pts)
* Blackhide Wrastler (9pts)
Gatormen Posse (Leader and 4 Grunts) (9pts)
Croak Hunter (2pts)

Anyone play Warmachine over Vassal? I don't have a chance to get to the LFGS today to get some practice games in before a tourney on Sunday and would love a chance to practice!

I'm basically copy-posting this from a post I made on another forum.

So. The other day, PP put up a Kickstarter for a new turn-based tactics PC game called Warmachine: Tactics. This is different from the action video game they teased years ago. That one couldn't find a publisher, so this time they're doing it the crowdfunding way. After 2 days, they've already been funded and hit 2 of their stretch goals. Link: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/409030043/warmachine-tactics

Anyway, to commemorate their first Kickstarter campaign, PP created models for new character journeyman warcasters for each WM faction except Cyriss (too new, limited release, yada, yada, yada) and is releasing them as backer rewards. These sculpts are KS exclusives! After the Kickstarter is over, they will literally be breaking the molds. HOWEVER, if you miss out on the KS, there will be a general release of these characters with different models. And so you know if any of them are worth picking up, here are their rules. http://privateerpress.com/download-the-stats-for-the-warmachine-tactics-kickstarter-models-now

Oh, and did I mention there is a full warcaster in there along with his epic version? The twist on this guy is the normal version works for Cygnar, but the epic version works for Cryx. Both are part of the KS, too.

Finally, Hordes will be getting a similar treatment depending on this game's success. HORDES players, do not despair! When this thing takes off, you’re next.

I'm still up in the air if I want to do the $40 level just for the mini or the $85 level for the mini and the bells and whistles for the game. I am a sucker for soundtracks and art books.

If I was employed right now, I'd be in a similar quandary. As it is, I went $45. $40 for the game and a mini (TBD, but likely Andrei), and that extra $5 for the two novella add on reward.

Wow funded already. Probably helps that they look to have a pretty functional prototype up and running.

That and an existing user base along with rewards that cater to said user base.
